Student POY: Runner UPMelissa Melvin-RodriguezOn November 19, 2001, in a small bar in downtown Durham, North Carolina, six women transformed themselves into luchadoras. Luchadoras are female wrestlers who participate in Mexican lucha libre, a popular form of professional wrestling in Mexico, characterized by colorful masks and rapid, free-style maneuvers. In just three short weeks the women learned choreographed moves, created their respective personas and assembled flashy costumes from recycled materials. Through the pain of injuries sustained during matches, costumes being ripped and the ultimate insult in this sport, being unmasked by another wrestler, these six women forged a unique and lasting bond inside and outside the ring.
